The following is general information on the various aluminum alloys and grades, and their typical applications.

With aluminum of 99 percent or higher purity, these compositions are characterized by excellent corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, low mechanical properties and excellent workability. This material is non-heat treatable.

1050 Aluminum Alloy

  • Chemical equipment, food industry containers, architectural flashings, cable sheathing

1100 Aluminum Alloy

  • Sheet metal work, fin stock, name plates, utensils, spun hollowware, rivets, high conductivity applications

Copper is the principal alloying element in this group, giving it strength, hardness and machinability. These alloys are heat treatable.

2024 Aluminum Alloy

Since corrosion resistance is relatively low, 2024 is commonly used with an anodized finish or in clad form (“Alclad”), with a thin surface layer of high purity aluminum.

  • High strength aircraft structural components, aircraft fittings, hardware, truck wheels and parts for the transportation industry

2219 Aluminum Alloy

  • Commonly used in the manufacture of structural components used in high temperature applications as well as high strength weldments.

Manganese is the major alloying element in this group. These alloys are not heat treatable. They have a superior combination of corrosion resistance and formability.

3003 Aluminum Alloy

  • Roofing & siding materials, chemical and food equipment, storage tanks, home appliances, sheet-metal work

3004 Aluminum Alloy

  • Sheet-metal work, storage tanks, pressure vessels, truck/trailer parts

3025 Aluminum Alloy

  • Kitchenware, heat exchangers in vehicles, power plants

3104 Aluminum Alloy

  • Sheet-metal work, storage tanks, pressure vessels, truck/trailer parts

3105 Aluminum Alloy

  • Residential siding, mobile homes, rain carrying goods, truck/trailer roofing, sheet-metal work

Magnesium is one of the most effective and widely used alloying elements for aluminum, and is the principal element in the 5000 series alloys. When it is used as the major alloying element or combined with manganese, the result is a moderate- to high-strength, non-heat-treatable alloy. Alloys in this series are readily weldable and have excellent resistance to corrosion, even in marine applications.

5005 Aluminum Alloy

  • Roofing & siding materials, chemical and food equipment, storage tanks, home appliances, sheet-metal work, electrical conductors

5052 Aluminum Alloy

  • Traffic Signs, home appliances, marine parts, transportation parts, heavy duty cooking utensils, bulk food processing, hydraulic tubes, fuel tanks

5083 Aluminum Alloy

  • Unfired welded pressure vessels, heavy-duty truck/trailer assemblies, marine hulls, superstructures, drilling rigs, missile components, railroad cars

5086 Aluminum Alloy

  • Unfired welded pressure vessels, heavy-duty truck/trailer assemblies, marine hulls, superstructures, drilling rigs, missile components, railroad cars

5454 Aluminum Alloy

  • Truck/trailer bodies, welded assemblies, pressure vessels, boilers, marine service

Alloys in this group utilize magnesium and silicon in various proportions to form magnesium silicide, which makes them heat treatable. The magnesium-silicon (or magnesium-silicide) alloys possess good formability and corrosion resistance with high strength.

6061 Aluminum Alloy

  • Heavy-duty structures requiring good corrosion resistance, railroad cars, bridges, pipelines, aerospace, truck and marine, storage tanks, furniture

6063 Aluminum Alloy

  • Architectural applications – windows, doors, store fronts, trim items, furniture, pipe railings

6111 Aluminum Alloy

  • Automobile body panels

Zinc is the major alloying element in this group, and when coupled with a smaller percentage of magnesium results in heat-treatable alloys of very high strength.

7050 Aluminum Alloy

  • Aircraft structures, aircraft parts, high stressed parts

7075 Aluminum Alloy

  • Aircraft manufacturing, used where highest strength is needed

7475 Aluminum Alloy

  • Aircraft manufacturing, used where highest strength is needed
